Museum for African Art
New York, NY
Overview
Brickman was selected by the Museum for African Art through a "request for proposals" process to develop a new home for the Museum at the end of the Museum Mile, 5th Avenue and East 110th Street. Located at the Northeast corner of Central Park, the new museum will become a cultural asset for New York City and a gateway to Harlem, which is undergoing a cultural and economic renaissance. Brickman worked with the Museum for African Art to create consensus within the community for the project's approval.
Description
Brickman and the Museum for African Art have developed transformative plans to reinvigorate this unique location at the top of Duke Ellington Circle. The museum will house over 16,000 square feet of exhibition galleries, an interactive education center, a 210-seat staged theater, a year round roof garden for events, a café restaurant, and climate controlled art storage space. Brickman will also be developing 150 high-end condominiums above the museum.
Results
Brickman and the Museum for African Art were able to build alignment with the community and have received preliminary approval from the City to commence construction. The project is expected to break ground in 2007. All of the residencies will have unobstructed views, as the condominiums start on the 4th floor of the complex. The project is expected to be completed in 2009.
